MARY KATHERINE
ROCHFORD
CANDIDATE FOR THE OFFICE OF:
JUDGE, APPELLATE COURT, APPELLATE DISTRICT 1, VACANCY OF THE HON. LESLIE E. SOUTH
NOVEMBER 2, 2010 ELECTION:
2010 ILLINOIS GENERAL ELECTION
CANDIDATE STATEMENT
My judicial career has covered nineteen years and I have heard a great variety and types of cases. Since 2007, I have served in the Chancery Division resolving complex cases, often involving multi-million dollar disputes. Prior to 2007, I was dually assigned to the Law Division and heard serious personal injury cases, and to the Second Municipal District. During my judicial tenure in the Second Municipal District I handled a significant number of civil and criminal matters including domestic violence and misdemeanors, including charges of driving under the influence, and was involved in community activities and student education. In 2006 I was privileged to be named Judge of the Year by the North Suburban Bar Association and to receive a 2007 Victim Safety Award from the YWCA. When first appointed to the bench, I was assigned to the First Municipal District from 1991-1993.
From 1979 until my appointment as an Associate Judge in 1991, I was an appellate lawyer for the Office of the Corporation Counsel, City of Chicago, and in private practice handling a variety of cases before the Illinois Supreme and Appellate Courts and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Under Mayor Harold Washington, I was appointed Chief Assistant Corporation Counsel in charge of the Appeals Division. The Chicago Council of Lawyers found that I am “Well Qualified” for the Appellate Court, stating:
“Judge Rochford is considered to have very good legal ability and temperament. She is praised for her courtroom management skills… as being exceptionally well-prepared, hard-working, and fair to all parties. She has demonstrated her ability to be an excellent appellate lawyer, to make the successful transition to being a highly respected trial judge in the Law Division, and to make the successful transition to being a Chancellor. She is involved in substantial community service efforts, and has demonstrated her writing ability.”
The Illinois State Bar and the Chicago Bar Associations found I am “Qualified” for the Appellate Court. The Chicago Bar Association said: “Judge Rochford is a highly respected legal scholar who possesses all the requisite qualifications for service by the Illinois Appellate Court.”
In this election I provide the citizens with an extensive and varied judicial background and an extensive and varied appellate practice background. I also run on a reputation of fairness, impartiality, and diligence. I am solely financing my candidacy and thus ask only your vote.
