CANDIDATE FOR THE OFFICE OF:
COOK COUNTY COMMISSIONER, DISTRICT 14
NOVEMBER 2, 2010 ELECTION:
2010 ILLINOIS GENERAL ELECTION
CANDIDATE STATEMENT
It is a privilege to represent the citizens of the 14th District on the Cook County Board of Commissioners. Every day I thank you for the opportunity you have given me to reinvent Cook County into an efficient, effective and economical unit of government, managed in a professional manner.
Since taking the oath of office, I have worked hard to earn the confidence and trust you have placed in me. There is no doubt that the last four years have seen some of the most contentious and divisive actions on the County Board, but despite this environment I have been able to successfully create policies and pass legislation to make a difference in our community:
• Blocked President Stroger’s additional tax increases – While the president was able to push through a sales tax increase, I, working with our Reform Coalition, stopped more than 10 additional taxes proposed for your cell phone, energy usage, auto purchases and more.
• Created and passed legislation preventing the County Board President from simultaneously serving as a commissioner.
• Created and passed policy creating an independent governance board for the County Hospital and Healthcare System, separating it from the County President’s Office.
• Increased transparency with new budget procedures instituting individual consideration of each capital project, a change from the former process where the president’s office issued bonds for all projects at one time, with no oversight.
• Sponsored Quarterly Budget Accountability Ordinance—Holds county departments and agencies accountable for spending our tax dollars, not in December, at the end of the year, but quarterly, when it is not too late to make corrections to keep them in line.
• Chair the Forest Preserve District’s influential Finance Committee—The 14th District has the 2nd largest holding of Forest Preserve land so responsible management of this precious resource is a key priority for our community.
More than anything else, I am proud of my progress in working to reinvent Cook County into a more efficient, economical and effective unit of government. Challenging and exciting times are ahead – and you can count on me to continue to focus on making sure our area receives its fair share of county resources. I thank you for your support!
